Let your emotions flow, not water

This project was conceived as part of a 5-day Physical Computing workshop followed by a quick project on problem solving.

Information Communications Device

• Informs the user

• Nudges the User to close the tap

• Creates an awareness among passers-by

Displays the message: Don't leave me crying :(

Objective

Propose an intervention to solve the identified problem area. The solution should utilise the learning of the physical computing workshop.

Problem Area

Water wastage- The water keeps leaking from the taps located at NID Gandhinagar's Canteen.

Contextual Inquiry

Why do the taps keep leaking many times during the day?

  • The water leaking has little to no sound; often goes unnoticed (as shown above)

  • College canteen is a busy area

  • Noisy area

  • A lot of movement happens in the area

  • Everyone is in a hurry ; 'On the go'

  • Location of the taps; beside a door (transit area)

How can we ensure non-leakage of taps ?

  • Replace the tap

  • Designing for behavioral change- 'Nudging' the user to close the tap properly.

Why Nudging as a solution?

The problem didn't completely lie in the malfunctioning of the tap but the way it was used by the Users.

Design Intervention

Information Communications Device

  • Informs the user

  • Nudges the User to close the tap

  • Creates an awareness among passers-by

Informs the students by displaying the following message: Don't leave me crying :(

Over time, most of the students become informed. Consecutive nudges help inculcate and build the habit of closing the tap completely.

Prototyping and Testing

Once the prototype was ready it was tested at the site.
